Valerie Threlfall, Principal
My consulting approach is grounded in more than 15 years experience working as a nonprofit practitioner and leader within highly successful startup organizations.
Prior to creating Threlfall Consulting, I served as Vice-President and founding director of the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s (CEP) YouthTruth project, scaling YouthTruth from an idea described in a two-page memo to a nationally recognized survey and data analysis organization capturing youth perspectives.
In addition to conducting the landscape analysis that justified YouthTruth’s development in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, I designed the YouthTruth pilot program from scratch and expanded the program four-fold within two years. Under my leadership, YouthTruth surveyed more than 125,000 students from 215 schools across 28 districts/networks in a four-year period and produced tangible improvements across participating schools. More than 85 percent of participating educators have used YouthTruth data to inform their programmatic and policy decisions.
As Executive Director of YouthTruth, I developed a strategic plan that challenged the organization to make major service delivery and infrastructure changes to their model. As a result of this plan’s implementation, YouthTruth significantly increased its earned revenue and achieved huge efficiencies in its production. To support the organization during its transition to an increasingly earned revenue strategy, I successfully secured more than $2.6 million in multiyear bridge funding through 2015.
Prior to joining CEP in 2008, I worked as a nonprofit strategy consultant, drafting business and fundraising plans in close collaboration with clients such as Global Giving, Partners in Health, and Monitor Institute.
From 2002 to 2007, I helped to build a highly successful startup biotechnology company, Momenta Pharmaceuticals (publicly traded, $750MM at peak). Joining as the fifteenth employee, I drafted the company’s first business plan as well as its registration statement and roadshow presentation when it went public less than two years later. During my five year tenure, I was responsible for leading corporate-wide strategic planning and budgeting processes, facilitating executive-level portfolio management conversations, and personally building out capacities and departments in public, investor, and government relations.
I hold an MBA with Distinction from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and a Master of Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School. I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Swarthmore College.
When I’m not working, I can be found making up stories for and trying to keep up with my four year old daughter, Sophia.
